SOUTH SARDINIA AND SULCIS ARCHIPELAGO
The BioDistrict South Sardinia and Sulcis Archipelago was established as a cooperative society in November 2021 following about fifteen territorial awareness and animation meetings supported by the LAORE Sardinia Agency and was recognized by the Autonomous Region of Sardinia in March 2023. It includes 50 organic farms and 15 different entities including 3 agricultural organizations (Copagri, CIA and Confagricoltura), three cooperative centers (LegaCoop, ConfCooperative and AIGC), ASAB Sardinia (Sardinian Association for Organic Agriculture), Legambiente, Slow Food, cultural associations and tourism sector organizations. The president of the BioDistrict is Ignazio Cirronis, a pioneer of organic agriculture in Sardinia.
The companies belonging to the BioDistrict South Sardinia and Sulcis Archipelago are focused on 5 supply chains:
- fruit and vegetables
- sheep milk-cheese
- cereals-bread-pasta
- oil
- wine
The territory involved encompasses the historic province of Cagliari, now the Metropolitan City Province plus the South Sardinia Province and some municipalities of Oristano and Nuoro areas. Overall, the companies belonging to the BioDistrict, including the prominent Organic Producers Organization S’Atra Sardigna, a recognized PO for fruit and vegetables and for sheep milk-cheese and for the organic durum wheat supply chain agreement, generate a turnover of over 15 million euros. The most important companies engaged in processing organic products from the 5 supply chains of the BioDistrict South Sardinia and Sulcis Archipelago are present.
The objectives of the BioDistrict, with a view to integrating and enhancing Sardinian culture and the Tabarchino culture present in the municipalities of Calasetta and Carloforte, are:
- Development of organic agriculture in the BioDistrict territory
- Growth and strengthening of the 5 supply chains
- Agreements with local authorities and tourism operators to increase consumption of organic products in collective catering and the local market
- Spread of renewable energy and creation of various energy communities
- Creation of shared services (transport, collective purchases of technical equipment, technical assistance, training, etc.) useful for increasing the income of existing organic farms and encouraging the conversion of new agricultural businesses to organic
- Research and experimentation of new techniques and new technical equipment that can be used in organic agriculture.
